About Independent Luthiery
I started Independent Luthiery in 2013, but I’ve been working on guitars for more than 30 years. I graduated from the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in 1992 and have worked on everything from everyday working instruments to valuable vintage guitars.
Before starting Independent Luthiery, I spent nearly a decade with Boston-based First Act. I started in the Custom Shop, building instruments for professional musicians and working with many of the players who became longtime clients.
Independent Luthiery is a full-service repair shop. I handle setups, fretwork, electronics, structural repairs and most of the other problems that guitars develop over a lifetime of use.
From the Basement to Cabot Street
For many years, I ran Independent Luthiery from my basement workshop. As the business grew, so did the number of instruments coming through the shop, and eventually I ran out of room.
In 2025, I moved the business to River Street in Beverly, the first dedicated commercial home for Independent Luthiery. The business continued to grow, and after only a year and a half, I had outgrown that shop as well.
In July 2026, Independent Luthiery moved to its new home on Cabot Street in downtown Beverly. The move marks the latest stage in the steady growth of the business from a basement workshop to a full-time professional repair shop.
Despite that growth, Independent Luthiery remains a one-person shop. I evaluate the instruments, talk with customers about the work, and perform the repairs myself.
